Co-designing an Inclusive Community Engagement Toolkit with an Indigenous Health Center

Native American Health Center (NAHC) provides comprehensive services to improve the health and well-being of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and residents of the surrounding communities,. NAHC recognizes and respects the culture, identity, and traditions of all people. They utilize a holistic model of care, which treats each member as a whole person, acknowledging and responding to their physical, emotional, spiritual, and social service needs. With a new facility design underway, the joint project team set off with a shared goal of co-designing a space of belonging and community history as part of the new community cultural center. The pandemic hit right around our project kickoff, and as a front-line health center, our collaborator’s attention and priorities shifted. What emerged was a desire for best practices and a toolkit to engage their community members around the community center design.

THEMES

THEMES

THEMES

Through interactive activities, we co-designed an engagement toolkit for NAHC to use when their community had more capacity. We facilitated an equity-centered and trauma-informed process. We stayed mindful of International Indigenous Design Charter principles at every step: deep listening, shared benefits, self-determination, and Indigenous leadership.

Community Mapping & Storytelling

We mapped NAHC's stakeholder groups along with their technological capacities and modes of communication with NAHC. In parallel, we gathered contextually resonant engagement themes and prompts by faciliating storytelling circles with a stakeholder group at NAHC.

Building trust and partnership with NAHC virtually during the pandemic was understandably slow. We met NAHC where they were. We filled capacity gaps and hosted virtual co-design workshops with activities adapted to their technological capabilities.

"We’re excited that through our newest site, we will address three of the most critical needs our community is facing: dental care, affordable housing, and access to safe spaces to gather, learn, and celebrate our cultures together."
